Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi(Uttar Pradesh)

Deities: Vishwanath-Visweswara -Shiva

This is an ancient temple steeped in antiquity, dedicated to Shiva - Visweswara - the Lord of the Universe. Considered to be one of the holiest of shrines in the holiest of places in the Hindu system of belief, on the banks of the river Ganga, this temple attracts pilgrims from all over the country all through the year. The Shiva Lingam worshipped here constitutes one of the 12 Jyotir Lingams in India. Built and re-built several times, the current structure dates back to 1776 and was built by Ahalya Bai Holkar. The roof of the temple is plated with gold.
